Nothing to see here, I thought as I moved quietly down the hall. Just a girl with a knife sticking out of her chest, totally normal, move along.

Jiada's bed was still slamming noisily into the wall as I passed. My eyebrows climbed up my forehead. It must have been thirty minutes, maybe more. Damn, Zhin. Good man.

Valour huffed, letting her disapproval known as she walked through the bathroom door—literally, phasing through the wood—and I headed for the staircase. I clutched the railing with clammy hands, going over the positives in my head so I didn't focus on the negatives.

One. I had a map marked with the rebel's plans to assassinate Kier. Even if I was crazy and he still hated me, this would at least buy me an audience with him.

Two. I had a journal that probably contained names of the other rebels, and maybe told me who the woman pulling all their strings was.

Three. I now had four extra items of power to help me channel more magic. That gave me five, and while I wasn't rivalling Hames's impressive jewellery collection any time soon, it was a big step up from a single ring.

I wavered three steps from the bottom of the stairs, pain hitting me in a rush. I fumbled for the railing and managed to stay upright through sheer will, cutting off a whimper in my throat.

"Four," I gasped, breathing slowly until I had a handle on the pain and wasn't about to face-plant the steps. "I have a new knife."

Sure, it was embedded in my body, but it was brand new and no one could take it from me.

Five. Backup was almost certainly on the way. I was surprised the house wasn't surrounded by white fog already.

I reached the bottom of the stairs and took a fortifying breath before I opened the door to the basement. I suppressed a groan at the darkness beckoning from downstairs. It was bad enough navigating these steps when I was pain-free, but with a stab wound and throbbing ribs?

"You're a strong, capable assassin," I breathed, psyching myself up as I took the first step and latched my hand around the cold metal railing. "Remember when Marc the Scythe caught you stealing wine from his cellar and beat the shit out of you? You got through that; you can endure this, too."

I wasn't sure if I blacked out or if it was just the darkness of the basement, but I barely processed anything until my foot met the solid floor at the bottom.

Jakoda still hung from the chains where I'd left her, looking dead to all intents and purposes. Panic that she was really, truly dead made my heart race, and I stumbled as fast as I could across the cold basement, grasping her shoulders.

"Rats," she croaked.

"Huh?" I searched for a weakness in the chains, wondering where the hell Valour was. She better have found a whole crate of bandages; I needed to take the knife out and put pressure on my wound.
